tobyaw: Shops closing down in St Andrews

Wandered into town to see the Christmas lights being switched on. Usually I don’t get beyond South Street, but we had a wander up and down Market Street today.

Marmaris has closed down! A pity; I rather like the booth seats and the friendly service. OK, so the chips were mediocre, but it was easy to have a family meal sharing a pizza and a big plate of salad. Apparently it is being redeveloped to become a Domino’s Pizza.

Fritto (né P.M.s) has gone; it has become a chip shop called Cromers. And they are now frying in beef fat, so no chips for us vegetarians. (At least they have the honesty to state that on the menu, unlike the liars at the Tail End.) A portion of chips for Beth was a pricey £2.10, and ketchup was 25p per sachet. Uninspiring.

Thorntons is closing down! It will be gone by February. No great loss, though — as long as Burns Sweet Shop is still trading, why would one go into Thorntons?

part of a general closing of shops or were they crap shops?

Not a trend, just a bit of a churn. Fast food changing to other fast food isn’t surprising; just means we lose a little familiarity.

And Thorntons… hard to understand how why it exists as a dedicated shop.

I hear a rumour that littlejohns turned into Nando's,is that true? I don't know what happened to my sweet little hometown!

Yes, now a Nandos’s where LJ’s was. Another chain restaurant; uninteresting. Old culinary landmarks of St Andrews disappear!

I was slightly more suprised by losing Argos, it's always seemed fairly busy.
And the ex-Pancake Place is now The St Andrews Brewing place :>
